5 Ways to Know When a Student is Ready to Read Decodables
Some parents and teachers wonder when a child is ready to read...as in actually read the words themselves, and so this post is dedicated to knowing when that time is because there are a few skills that a child must have in place to be ready to hold a book, turn their own pages and read the sounds in every words from the beginning to the end.

Phonemic Awareness: The ability to hear, identify and manipulate individual sounds (phonemes) in spoken words.

Phonics: The understanding of how letters and letter combinations represent specific sounds.

Vocabulary Development: Acquiring a rich understanding of the words and their meanings.

Background Knowledge: Understanding and connecting information that a child already knows to new information they are learning.

Print Awareness: Recognizing that print carries meaning and understanding how to handle a book, including knowing which way to turn the pages.
