What Is the Science of Reading Approach to Phonics?
If you’ve heard the phrase Science of Reading over and over but still wonder what it actually means for phonics instruction, you’re not alone.
The Science of Reading is not a program, curriculum, or single method for teaching reading. It is a large body of research from multiple fields that helps us understand how the brain learns to read and which instructional practices best support that learning.
And one finding is especially important for beginning readers: learning to read words is not something we should leave to chance.
Unlike spoken language, reading does not develop naturally simply through exposure. Students need instruction that helps them connect the sounds they already know in spoken language to the letters and letter patterns that represent those sounds in print.
That is where explicit, systematic phonics instruction comes in.
Where Does Phonics Fit in the Science of Reading?
Phonics is important, but phonics is not the whole of reading.
The National Reading Panel identified five essential areas of reading instruction: phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension. Other influential models, including the Simple View of Reading and Scarborough’s Reading Rope, help us understand how these different aspects of reading development work together.
The Simple View of Reading describes reading comprehension as the product of two broad abilities:
Decoding × Language Comprehension = Reading Comprehension
That multiplication sign matters.
A student may have strong oral language, vocabulary, background knowledge, and reasoning abilities, but if that student cannot efficiently read the words on the page, those language comprehension abilities cannot fully support independent reading comprehension.
Likewise, a student can become an accurate word reader but still struggle to understand text if language comprehension is weak.
We need to develop both.
Scarborough’s Reading Rope illustrates this development in even greater detail. Word recognition includes phonological awareness, decoding, and the increasingly automatic recognition of familiar words. Language comprehension includes background knowledge, vocabulary, language structures, verbal reasoning, and literacy knowledge.
These strands develop alongside one another and become increasingly interconnected and automatic.
Phonics is one critical part of that larger reading system.
What Does Science-Aligned Phonics Instruction Look Like?
Effective phonics instruction is explicit, systematic, and cumulative.
Explicit
We teach students directly what we want them to learn.
Rather than hoping students discover a spelling pattern after seeing it enough times, the teacher clearly introduces the sound-spelling relationship, models how it works, guides students as they practice it, and gradually releases responsibility as students become more accurate and automatic.
Systematic
Skills are taught according to an intentional scope and sequence.
Students aren't learning phonics patterns randomly based on the letter of the week, the words in a story, or whatever happens to appear on a worksheet.
New learning builds on previous learning.
Cumulative
Previously taught skills don't disappear when the class moves to the next lesson.
Students continue to read, spell, and work with earlier patterns while adding new ones. This cumulative practice is especially important because knowing a skill during Friday's lesson doesn't necessarily mean a student will retrieve it automatically three weeks later.
The goal isn't simply to teach the phonics skill.
The goal is for students to use it automatically when they read and write.
Decoding and Encoding Belong Together
One of the most important shifts in strong phonics instruction is recognizing that reading and spelling reinforce one another.
When students decode, they look at graphemes and retrieve the phonemes they represent.
When students encode, they hear phonemes and determine which graphemes represent those sounds in the word they are trying to spell.
That's why dictation is such an important part of phonics instruction.
Students shouldn't only read words containing the pattern they're learning. They should also segment words into phonemes, connect those phonemes to graphemes, and write the words themselves.
For example, if students are learning the digraph sh, instruction might include:
- -identifying /sh/ in spoken words
- -connecting /sh/ to the grapheme sh
- -blending words such as ship, shop, and fish
- -segmenting those words into phonemes
- -spelling words containing sh
- -writing a dictated sentence containing the pattern
- -reading connected decodable text containing sh
Reading it and writing it belong together, and that is why all of these decoding and encoding components are included daily in my Hello Phonics® Structured Phonics Lessons. While I have written 120 decodable books aligned the my explicit phonics lessons, decodable books are separate—they are the perfect practice tool AFTER the explicit phonics lesson, the necessary practice tool to apply the phonics skill in connected text.
What Does Explicit Phonics Instruction Look Like in the Classroom?
Good phonics instruction doesn't require elaborate materials or complicated centers.
In fact, some of the most powerful instruction happens with a teacher, students, letters, words, paper, pencils, and text.
A strong lesson may include phonemic awareness connected to the target skill, explicit introduction or review of a sound-spelling relationship, teacher modeling, blending practice, word building or word chaining, encoding and dictation, cumulative review, and reading connected decodable text.
The teacher is actively involved throughout the lesson.
If students are reading cat, we want them attending to c-a-t, connecting those graphemes to /k/ /ă/ /t/, blending the sounds, and reading the word.
We don't want them looking at the picture and asking themselves what word would make sense.
The print should do the work.
Why Cumulative Review Matters
Phonics learning is not one-and-done.
Students need repeated opportunities to retrieve previously taught sound-spelling relationships and apply them in different words and contexts.
That means a lesson on digraphs doesn't suddenly stop including CVC words. A lesson on silent-e words doesn't mean short vowels disappear. As students learn more of the code, their practice should expand to include both new and previously learned patterns.
This is one reason a carefully planned scope and sequence matters.
Every new skill has somewhere to attach.
And every lesson gives teachers another opportunity to strengthen what came before.
Assess → Group → Teach
Even the strongest phonics curriculum cannot assume that every student in a classroom needs the same phonics instruction at the same time.
Students arrive with different knowledge.
That's why I come back again and again to three words:
Assess → Group → Teach
Assess
Find out what students actually know.
A universal screener can help identify students who may be at risk, but screening and diagnostic assessment serve different purposes. Once we know a student needs additional support, we need more specific information.
Which sound-spelling relationships are secure?
Can the student blend?
Can the student segment?
Can the student decode CVC words?
What happens with digraphs? Blends? Silent-e patterns? Vowel teams? Multisyllabic words?
We need enough information to identify the student's instructional starting point.
Group
Group students according to the skill they need next, not simply according to a broad reading level.
Two students who appear to be reading at approximately the same level may have very different decoding needs.
One may need additional work with short vowels.
Another may be secure with short vowels but struggle with vowel teams.
A reading level alone doesn't tell us that.
Teach
Once we know the need, we can provide explicit instruction targeted to that need.
Then we monitor student performance and adjust.
Assessment should inform instruction, not merely generate another score.
Assess. Group. Teach. Then reassess and respond.
Where Do Decodable Books Fit?
This is where an important distinction often gets lost.
Decodable books are not the phonics lesson.
They are the application of the phonics lesson.
After students have received explicit instruction in a sound-spelling pattern, they need an opportunity to encounter that pattern in connected text.
That's the job of a decodable book.
A well-aligned decodable gives beginning readers a chance to use the code they've been taught instead of relying on pictures, predictable sentence patterns, or context to guess unfamiliar words.
For example, if students have just learned sh, a carefully controlled decodable allows them to repeatedly encounter words containing sh while also reviewing previously taught patterns.
Now the phonics lesson has a purpose.
Students aren't learning sh so they can complete a worksheet about sh.
They're learning it because it helps them read.
Decodable Does Not Mean "Easy"
A decodable text is not defined by how easy it is.
It is defined by how well its text aligns with the phonics knowledge students have been taught.
That's an important difference.
The right decodable for a student is not necessarily the book assigned to that student's grade level. It is the text that provides appropriate practice with the code that student currently knows and is learning.
This becomes especially important for older students with decoding gaps.
A third, fourth, or fifth grader who still needs explicit instruction in foundational skills should receive it. But the content, photography, illustrations, and topics of the practice text should respect that student's age and interests.
Students deserve instruction at their point of need without materials that make them feel younger than they are.
What Should You Look for in Decodable Text?
Not every book labeled "decodable" serves the same instructional purpose.
Look for texts that:
- -align to a clear phonics scope and sequence
- -primarily contain phonics patterns students have already learned
- -intentionally practice the newly taught target skill
- -cumulatively review previous learning
- -provide enough repetition for students to build accuracy and automaticity
- -include both fiction and nonfiction when possible
- -use limited, intentionally selected words containing untaught patterns
- -provide meaningful connected reading rather than disconnected word practice
Most importantly, match the book to the instruction.
The question shouldn't be, "What color or level should this student be reading?"
The better question is:
What has this student been explicitly taught to decode, and what does this student need to practice next?
What About Vocabulary, Knowledge, and Comprehension?
Teaching phonics does not mean putting language comprehension on hold.
Beginning readers should be developing rich oral language, vocabulary, background knowledge, syntax, reasoning, and comprehension at the same time that they are developing foundational word-reading skills.
We simply don't have to ask beginning readers to independently decode text far beyond their current word-reading abilities in order to develop those language skills.
Teachers can assume the decoding burden through rich read-alouds, conversation, knowledge building, and explicit language instruction while students' independent decoding abilities are developing.
Meanwhile, students can practice their own reading in text that allows them to successfully apply the phonics knowledge they have been taught.
These aren't competing priorities.
They develop together.
Common Misconceptions About the Science of Reading and Phonics
"The Science of Reading is just phonics."
No.
Phonics is an essential component of reading instruction, but skilled reading requires both efficient word recognition and strong language comprehension.
"Explicit phonics means drill and kill."
Explicit doesn't mean boring.
Students can blend, build, manipulate, spell, write, read, talk, and play with words while receiving carefully sequenced instruction.
What matters is that the learning objective is clear and students aren't expected to discover the alphabetic code on their own.
"Decodable books replace real books."
Absolutely not.
Children need rich literature, informational text, poetry, read-alouds, classroom libraries, conversations, and opportunities to build knowledge.
Decodable books serve a specific purpose: they provide beginning, developing and struggling readers with connected-text practice applying the phonics they have been taught.
"Good readers will figure out phonics naturally."
Some children appear to crack the code with relatively little instruction.
We cannot build an instructional system around the students who would have figured it out anyway.
Explicit, systematic instruction makes the code visible and accessible to all students, including those who need substantially more repetition and support.
"Structured Literacy is only for students with dyslexia."
The explicit, systematic, cumulative teaching practices associated with Structured Literacy are essential for students with dyslexia and beneficial for beginning readers more broadly.
We don't need to wait for students to struggle before giving them clear instruction.
From Phonics Instruction to Real Reading
The goal of phonics is not to produce students who can perform phonics skills for a teacher.
The goal is reading.
Students should be able to take what they have learned about the alphabetic code and use that knowledge to read words they have never seen before.
Then, with repeated successful encounters, words become increasingly automatic, freeing students' attention for the reason we read in the first place:
meaning.
That's why the sequence matters.
That's why explicit instruction matters.
That's why encoding matters.
That's why cumulative review matters.
And that's why the text we put in students' hands after the lesson matters.
