One of the responsibilities of educators is to teach our students' caregivers when practices in education change. Since memorizing sight words is not a best practice anymore, use this letter to explain the practice of "mapping" sounds to spellings and how the brain actually learns to read and spell new words.

Use this free Word Mapping Mat to as you are teaching students to spell by segmenting sounds. Use it at your small group table, during intervention or place it at a center. Remember that Mapping Words is replacing Memorizing Words. 

These left to right sound strips are a good visual reminder that students should blend sounds when decoding and segment sounds when spelling from left to right, one sound at a time. These strips are are for 3-phoneme words like vet, duck, with, ship or whack.

Use these lowercase & uppercase alphabet cards as students practice proper letter formation, specifically, proper starting point and letter path. Each card is 8.5 x 11 but you can easily print 2 or 4 to a page at the Print Menu by selecting Multiple Pages. Laminate and put at your Salt Tray literacy center, Handwriting Center or Writing Center or Busy Box.

Print, cut & laminate this visual reminder for your classroom. As students are learning to keep their eyes on the words when reading, finding the vowels first will help them remember their phonics rules and syllable patterns. 

As we are teaching little ones to learn to read, it’s important that WE pronounce the sounds correctly so that we can teach kids to pronounce sounds correctly. Use this cheat sheet in your lesson planner, for parents or subs or at your small group table.
